On this day in 1994, I made a harrowing phone call to ask a girl out on a first date. I picked her up in a 1972 HQ Kingswood – bench seats, 202, three-on-the-tree, brown with a white roof – and took her to the Regal Cinema to watch two French movies – Olivier, Olivier and Jesus of Montreal. Twenty years later, the Regal has reopened and I’m very happily married to that girl, but this is all I have left of the once mighty Kingswood.
I really, really miss that car.
To the people who came and saw me, Siobhan Curran, Mark MacLean and Keri Glastonbury today at the Newcastle Writers Festival, thank you for being a wonderful audience! Your applause, well-wishes and nice comments – and just being there – are very much appreciated. Here is the picture I took of you (I told you they’re not all brilliant…)
